Definition of Family Violence: "Family violence includes violent, threatening, patterned and repeated use of coercive, or controlling behaviour that occurs in current or past family domestic or intimate relationships. This can include not only physical assaults but an array of power and control tactics used along a continuum in concert with one another, direct or indirect threats, sexual assault, emotional and psychological torment, economic control, property damage, social isolation and behaviour which causes a person to live in fear.
...Family violence can occur in any culture or relationship, including same sex, transgender, the elderly and people with disabilities. While it can be perpetuated by any member of a family against another, it is more likely to be perpetuated by men (predominately by a woman's current or ex-partner) against women and children." "Reforming the Family Violence System in Victoria", Report of the Statewide Steering Committee to Reduce Family Violence 2005 (p 11)
Definition of Sexual Assault: Sexual assault is any behaviour of a sexual nature that makes someone feel uncomfortable, frightened, intimidated or threatened. It is sexual behaviour that someone has not agreed to, where another person uses physical or emotional force against them. It can include anything from sexual harassment through to life threatening rape. Some of these acts are serious indictable crimes. Sexual assault is an abuse of power. Sexual assault is never the fault or responsibility of the victim/survivor.
